Abstract:
“Growing Up Crooked” traces the first twenty five years in the life of a physically handicapped boy growing up in a family struggling with its own social and emotional maladjustments. Through a series of insightful vignettes, the author follows the family’s personal triumphs and tragedies through the great depression, two world wars and a heavy dose of fundamentalist religion. With pathos and humor, the story unfolds toward a climax of love and forgiveness.

This story demands to be told and Mr. Rees tells it exceedingly well. With great personal determination, he transcends a physical handicap and a dysfunctional family to achieve love and success. The author places the reader in the scenes with vivid pictures that stir the emotions. It's a great read.

I was amazed by this book. It was a very emotional experience that took me back to my own youth. I was the "ugly duckling" in a dysfunctional family. The author's graphic portrayal of characters and scenes had me crying one minute and laughing the next. I couldn't put it down.
