{Nine} On a field across Route 13, I saw two turkeys, one hen and one disguised as a hen, only brown color, with a beard of three inches, long growing on it's chest.
{Ten} Driving further on, I passed the bee hives and two hundred yards down the road a red fox crossing out of the goose nesting area. One evening, I saw seven deer cross in back of my tent, while drinking my morning coffee.
{Eleven} The next morning Holocaust Day. I read in the Bible, in Isaiah. I didn't plan to start reading there on purpose, but just continued reading where I had left off some days before of the war with Iraq or near by. I believe the war there will happen again, because of the conditions which exist today in the world. Tell me that jealousy from terrorists or other countries may set the world of war off again there. How soon, I don't know.
{Twelve} I arose early to break camp. I heard an owl call and it's mate answer from somewhere in the wooded swamp. While driving out to the main road, a school bus was in front of me through a thick cloud of dust. I had to follow a hundred yards behind. It reminded me of the world I am entering, again to live in the city.
JUNE 5 Last night, after going to the Vietnam Veterans spring reunion on route 26 in Howard county, I came home, about five miles southwest. I decided about 5:30 to go to Walmart to get some fishing line. On the way there, going down Washington Street in the southeast sky, I noticed a single rainbow which seemed to end where I had been earlier at the Vietnam Veterans grounds. You are wondering where all these occurrences happened. They were in the eastern half of Howard County, Indiana, where the Howard County memorial and statue is located nearby. JUNE - SEPTEMBER 2001 In July I was sitting on a rock again fishing, in the afternoon. The fish were not biting very good. I looked up to the left and believe it or not there was a snake looking right at me. I talked to him and he stuck his head a little farther out of the water and stuck his tongue out at me. He then raised his head a full six inches out of the water. We looked at each other for a full ten minutes, then he sank below the water and disappeared . Later on our countries military operation was called Operation Anaconda (which was the name of a South American boa, a large snake). This snake was the only one I seen during this entire period of time between the Summer of 1997 and the Spring of 2002. Also the Arizona Rattlesnakes won the World Series in 2001. I continued selling my book, I REMEMBER walking the streets and roads of Howard County. At singing practice one of the men there would look at me once in a while as well as the others to get me and the rest of us in tune musically so we would harmonize together. Which we did; despite the pain I was in my voice fit, despite the fact I was nearly shocked out of my shoes. We sang a program of our countries historic songs. On the Fourth of July with musical accompaniment at the Highland Park bandstand I gave my recorder to Howard Drake who I had known from the Boy Scouts and he didnt know how to operate it properly. We got a standing ovation from 600 people there. On the 16th of July we sang again without musical accompaniment, this time there was a lady there who used to be in stage programs at Indiana University who I used to square dance with. She also had the same trouble with my recorder. We sang at different places throughout Howard county. On the 10th of September at seven thirty , we were practicing in the First Congregational Church in Kokomo up the street from the Kokomo Rescue Mission. I tried once again to get a recording of the Star Spangled Banner but my recorder failed me once more. At our break time around 9:30 I asked if I could try to record the Star Spangled Banner again and it worked this time. I went home after practice and went to bed.
SEPTEMBER 11 I went for a drive up the road, my destination was McDonalds gun shop near Gas City In, to buy a scope. Driving up route 26 I almost ran out of gas so I turned around and turning towards Fairmount where James Dean was born. I stopped in a gas station to gas up. The manager came outside and told me America had been attacked. The time was around 10 oclock . To me truth and time seemed stranger than fiction. The attack had occurred around 8:30 in the morning. I went inside and sure enough it was on the television. There was a picture of destruction on TV from New York City. Both the towers of the Twin Trade Towers had been hit and they looked like they were completely destroyed. There was little I could do, but watch in disbelief and realize it had happened and that because of last night, and the banner, our group was going to be in a history book someday. There was little I could do but gas up and continue on, and wonder how soon until our country would be at war . I figured it would be right now. From then on until the people or country or countries responsible would be brought to their knees.
