As the curtain goes up Mayor Blakely is talking to his lawyers.
Mayor Blakely: It has come to my attention that we have a troublemaker among us. An itinerant poet has been corrupting our children by teaching them phonics. He has littered the area around that big oak tree, which is supposed to be only for the benefit of little children according to my fathers will, with his chalk dust and who knows what else. Dont you know that it is against the law to teach the alphabet and phonics in Blakely? This has got to stop! We dont need anyone coming into our town and telling us how to teach our children! What are you going to do about it?
