"Never give up" is the theme of this inspiring true story.. It is a tale of a breakable body- with a very unbreakable spirit.

Abstract:
This is a true story about my lifelong battle- and victory- over a rare genetic bone disorder. Osteogenisis Imperfecta left my bones brittle and my body fragile. As a child I suffered hundreds of fractures. The story details the early years of hospital visits, pain and loneliness. However the uplifting events of encouragement, which helped me through those difficult times, times when even doctors thought I would not survive, are also illustrated. I write about the joy and the despair of growing up with a disability, a unique perspective of life for both the able-bodied and the physically challenged. Eventually I would rise above the broken bones and prejudice, attend college, earn my degree in Social Work, and help others in need. Colorful, loving profiles of family and friends, as well as episodes of romance, laughter and heartbreak are sprinkled through out the book, ultimately reaching a powerful climax of hope, inspiration and achievement. THOSE ARE THE BREAKS is a tale of a breakable body- with a very unbreakable spirit.

Greg has written an inspirational memoir of his battle. There are times in our lives that each of us can benefit from this man's strength and focus. I am honored he feels that I have played a role in that development. Anyone who reads Greg's book will be uplifted by his courage and determination.

What a great read story of one's struggle with what others percieve as a handicap, but through it all and through Greg's eyes, you will see how he not only can overcome it all (struggles when society did not have handicap capabilities) but also enjoy his life with much love, joys and humor as well. In reading his book, I was educated about his rare disease... and also learned what a warm & caring person he became, through the adversity of it all, and how he has selfishly given back to society. It proves once again, a handicap is only a handicap if you let it be one... but to Greg, that word doesn't seem to be part of his vocabulary. Bravo to Greg Smith!

Greg Smith's book is more than mere autobiography. You feel his soul, his pain, and the hope he inspires through the telling of his story living through a rare bone disorder. His words inspire and thanks to his book the world is more aware of the rare bone disease he has.
