Abstract:
Cat envies Evelina duPont’s beautiful clothes. Rachel fall ill, but under the care of a doctor and her mother, begins to improve. John meets a man who has seen a cloth finishing machine and buys some blue cloth from him. John tells Father about the machine. Mother makes the cloth into a shawl for Cat. John trying to solve a problem with the mill causes a fire. The fire is put out but John and Father are badly burned and Cat’s new shawl is ruined. Father asks John to go with him to Philadelphia to see about the new machine, and make application at the college, and perhaps find a new shawl for Cat.
