  River Raisin Richie , 10/29/2003
Reviewer: Margo Parmenter Zieske
Richie lives in the heart of everyone who grew up in a small town and more specifically Monroe, Michigan, during the 1950s. Richie is a reader. Being a reader of all kinds of books inspires him to see adventures in everyday life. Being a reader means he’s experienced some situations vicariously so when fast action is needed he’s there and he’s ready. School bully, Leroy Marlow was about to push Richie into the swollen River Raisin. But, in a split second Richie remembers, “an illustration in the judo book he had found in grandpa’s old Navy footlocker. He waited until the very last instant, until Leroy was one step away and then Richie made his move.” (Adventure three, The River) Well nasty ol’Leroy ends up in the river, and he can’t swim and yep, you guessed it, Richie saves him. Just wait till Gramma finds out! She is a force to be reckoned with. Each chapter of the book is more correctly labeled an adventure. There’s Dr. Richie, the famous archeologist, on a dig in the back yard, Richie, the detective who helps find a lost friend, and Richie, the photo journalist who caught the action of the bank robbery on his newly found and recently repaired camera. Richie even gets a letter from Charles A. Lindberg in the adventure of the lost library book. Each chapter is a complete adventure that is short enough to be read in a sitting, but long enough to be action packed and a fulfilling read. The author Thomas A. Bajkiewicz, blends solid research with childhood memories. He has deftly combined the memories of his own youth growing up in Monroe and the antics of his own children during their youth to create characters that speak of traditional American values. This is the first work of an author who is growing in his skills, and is a delight to read. Move over Hardy boys, Richie is here!
