…get it to Rosie for approval...If you can’t work at that pace then the job doesn’t really work out. Sometimes people don’t fulfill their early promise. It’s a burn out job.”

Abstract:
If Not Now…Then When? Stories and Strategies of People Over 40 Who Have Successfully Reinvented Themselves is the tale of Peter J. Fogel, one of the most successful stand-up comics in America that you’ve never heard of -- who, at over 40, decided to make a 360 degree career change and enter the world of direct mail copywriting. While on his journey Fogel interviewed other baby-boomers who over came osbstacles and then went onto to success in brand new careers. And here they are: 14 stories of people who did just that…against all odds, including Steven R. Schirripa of “The Sopranos.”

Author Peter Fogel makes a compelling argument for re-examining your life; after 40 or, for that matter, at any age! The book has implications for both private and corporate use, and I often found myself nodding in agreement with many of the "reinventors." I'm sure you will, too! Highly recommended...

I was a successful title insurance rep out here in the O.C. I had turned 42 and all my money brought me little happiness, then someone told me about this reinvention idea and I came across Mr. Fogel's book. "Viola" I have been transformed and Re-invented! I liquidated all my holdings, donated it all to the Christian Children's Fund that you see on TV and now I walk the streets of Irvine a happy, homeless and smelly 43 year old! Thank God for Mr. Fogel's book and thank god for reinventing yourself!

“For a stand-up comic, Fogel has a real sense on how he can, and has, used humor to help himself and others move beyond their blocks and obstacles. If Now Now… Then When? is a good one… an interesting and inspiring collection of stories about ordinary people rising to extraordinary new heights in their lives, and their careers.”

Having just plunged into the beginning of my own reinvention, and suffering from the doubts of big changes, this book inspired me to hang onto my new dream and take those little steps a day at a time to fulfill it. I'm charged to keep going and make my personal wish come true, just like those in the book. A wonderful book of inspiration and practical "how-to-manage-it" tips. Thanks Peter!

You want me to What?! When?! Everything changes. But what do you do when you are a certain age and you either have to make a change (your job is killing you), a window of opportunity opens, or life basically butt-kicks you out of your comfortable, maybe even profitable but not necessarily fulfilling niche? Peter Fogel’s book, "If Not Now...Then When?," goes head-to-head with the reality of recreating one’s life and career path at age 40 or over. His story and those of the people he interviewed, inspire and encourage readers who now face or are contemplating this situation. Fogel (the rumors are true–he is actually funny) reminds us to laugh whenever possible and keep going forward. This book is more than soup—it’s pastrami on rye with all the trimmings. While I was browsing the aisles at my local bookstore, the title of Peter's book caught my eye. Over the years I have thought about what I would do if I had a different job other than the one I currently have. However, I didn't think I was qualified to do anything else. After reading Peter's book I became inspired to reinvent myself just like the people whom he wrote about. Thanks for your help Peter

"If Not Now... Then When? Stories and Strategies of People Over 40 Who Have Successfully Reinvented Themselves" is refreshing, inspiring and fun. A very good read, regardless of your stage in life. It made me laugh and it made me sad. Most of all, it made me think about all the opportunities available to those of us who are willing to work hard and embrace the inevitable changes that are part of living in the 21st century. Well done, Peter!

If they can do it, so can you , 04/25/2006
Reviewer: Lisa J. Lehr
The key point made in *If Not Now--Then When? Stories & Strategies of People Over 40 Who Have Successfully Reinvented Themselves* is this: If they can do it, so can you. From a neglected child who grew up to be foster mom of many...to a television producer who cured a mysterious disability by yelling at her feet, then used her "platform" to help many others...to a comedian who became a copywriter (that's the author, Peter J. Fogel)...this book profiles over a dozen people who, as the title says, successfully reinvented themselves after 40. The "befores" and "afters" of these people vary widely, but the thing they share is that they all overcame daunting obstacles to reach their goals. Each chapter begins with an inspiring quote by a famous person. My favorite is this one by Gandhi: "Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning." Author Fogel says, "It astounds me that some reinventors, years later, went back to what they were doing as children, such as returning to their first love of music or art." Speaking for myself...my first love is writing. And I'd love to be a subject of the sequel to this book. But don't wait for the sequel. Read *If Not Now--Then When?* and be inspired to get busy on your own reinvention! If they can do it, so can you. Lisa J. Lehr www.justrightcopy.com

  Humorously Helpful & Instructive , 05/28/2006

"If Not Now...Then When?", is a humorously helpful, instructive and down-to-earth guide to personal reinvention. I'm 50 years old and in the midst of engineering my own personal reinvention after 25 years in the corporate world and was definitely able to empathize with and benefit from the numerous profiles in this book. Peter has clearly "been there and done that" and this direct experience comes across throughout the book. The variety of profiles is terrific and I especially found the analysis and summary of tips and suggestions at the end of each profile profoundly helpful. Side note - I was so impressed with the book that I e-mailed Peter with a basic question and he generously responded back to me the very next day with a thoughtfully crafted and very helpful response. His selfless intent on truly helping those of us struggling with our journeys of reinvention is inspiring and I unhesitatingly endorse this book and encourage anyone who is going through this often difficult process to make this investment in themselves.
