Abstract:
Pippa Adair is a young mother with an unfortunate childhood, a shaky marriage and precarious mental health. To her husband and his family, frequent psychiatric hospitalizations disqualify her as a mother. Aiden gives their daughter to his sister, Macy, to raise.

When Gracie is four, signs of abuse at the hands of Macy’s husband drive Pippa to kidnap Gracie. She solicits Aiden’s help in escaping prosecution and getting permanent custody of their daughter, but soon discovers he has betrayed her by calling the police.
