Five race riots that occurred in Cincinnati from 1829 to 1968 are the backdrop for the fictional Barber family. The story is told from the inception of Cincinnati and the Barber family, from the times of slavery to the twenty-first century the Barber family endures and Cincinnati evolves from overt racism to the covert.

This book explains the background of the racism prevalant in Cincinnati in an entertaining way. It was a page turner.

This book was entertaining and informative. As a newcomer to the Cincinnati area it revealed to me why some things are the way they are. I learned a great deal about my new city's black history.
