Abstract:
The year is 1901, and California’s last gold rush is quickly coming to an end. 13 year-old Callie Rose Miller is on a mission: To free her family once and for all from the grip of “gold fever” and get back to the farm where they belong.

Callie endures harsh living in a boomtown that’s going bust. Thanks to new friends and a beloved schoolteacher, she and her little brother manage to make the most of their stay. But all the while, Callie is hoping for that one big chance to break away from this land of broken dreams.

A Sparkling Gem for Young Readers , 08/05/2009
Reviewer: Margaret Browning
As an educator, I am quite impressed with this book. The story takes place in 1901 in a dying gold mining town in Southern California. Our clever 13 year-old heroine figures out a way to pry her gold-obsessed father away from imminent failure. Written in an engaging, detailed style, this story is nonetheless swift-moving and succinct. The author wisely avoids the heavy Victorian lexicon of the early 1900's, allowing for ease of reading and full engagement in the story. I would say that it is ideal for today's readers aged 9-12.
