Abstract:
Born of the Generation X era that is known for its extremes, Phoenix describes the extreme struggles of a Christian-born young woman. Through triumphs and failures, tragedies and miracles, this woman struggles to find the faith she was raised with. Not only find it, but keep it. Faith then becomes the axis upon which a struggle to discern good from evil revolves. Faith becomes the lifeline for a lower middle-income family drowning in the swells created by economic crisis. Phoenix: the true story of how God transformed Alice Kawar, an ordinary woman, into a testament of the power of faith.

Alice Kawar’s book Phoenix is a true story about a person’s strong determination to succeed. Born of a generation called “generation X” her story is filled with courage, perseverance, curiosity, adventure, and a strong faith in God. Once I started to read the first few pages, I couldn’t stop. It was just like I was there with her in every step of her life. Her genuine desire to share with the public her strong faith in Jesus culminates when she wrote about the car accident. No matter how thorny the road was for her, she always found a moment to stop, reflect, and put all her trust in Jesus that everything is going to be OK.
Alice loves adventure and excelled in girls camp fire, church programs, and writing. When she told of the incident about the boat by the river and the invitation by her husband’s so called friend to join him for a ride in the river while she was pregnant makes me shiver at the thought of what could have happened to her. This man never liked Alice and seriously injured her husband during an argument.
There is a lesson for every reader of this book to learn from her story: Faith can really move mountains just as it says in the Bible. Oh how the heavenly providence overshadow the life the believer! The author’s life story is a testament to that.
