Along the way he also learns to deal with disgruntled bingo patrons and drunks in a beer tent. He trains hard and comes face to face with his own mortality at the funeral of a fallen firefighter. As an EMT he helps his fellow citizens in their time of greatest need. Most of all, he learns about who he is as he confronts one of natures’ oldest enemies – fire.

This is a great book! Plenty of firefighting stories, plus accounts of all the other things that go along with it as a volunteer. Training, bingo, and the personal struggles he had to incur trying to balance the rest of his life along with the dedication it takes to be a volunteer firefighter. And its written by someone who was there and lived it,which shows. I read the book for 3 hours straight, the 1st time i read it!

Definitly a good read. Describes the trials and tribulations of life in the Fire Hall, from the mundane events that raise money for the hall to the adrenline of fighting fire. Also sheds light on the battle of balancing the Fire Hall vs. work and family. From being a Volunteer myself I can relate to his stories, but written in such a way that a civilian can understand it and have the urge to keep turning the pages.
