Momma hung up the phone abruptly, turned to me and slapped me across my face with her roughhewn hands. She had just talked to the old white lady, Mrs. Boardman.

Abstract:
Thirty-five year old Inez is raising six children in rural Suffolk, Virginia. Her sixteen year old daughter becomes pregnant; another nearly commits murder; her son is convicted of assault; she is reunited with her sixth child; her lover dies in the street in front of her; she is stricken with a deadly illness; and, her husband plots to move back home with her.

Inez must address the situations that arise in her life. Unfortunately, the consequences of Inez’s actions are detrimental to her children. This leads the children to understand that her form of education cannot compete with the classroom.

Memoirs of a Girl from Suffolk is about a girl who looks at her life from her mother’s perspective. Her mother wasn’t very nice. She did not need children. Her mother is a prime example of what not to be like as a parent. This book teaches us all a lesson if we are going to have children. No man should come before your children. Learn to take care of your children because they have to take care of you when you get old.

I loved this book from the beginning to the end. I had a lot of things that happened in my child hood. I would be afraid to put it in a book. I think it is bold for people to do that and I have a lot of respect for them. Memoirs of a Girl From Suffolk is sad but the writer found humor for what happened to her. I would recommend it. Her mother was not very nice. It important to learn to deal with the immediate negative people in your life. Sometimes those closest to us are out worse enemies.

Inez had a lot to deal with having 6 children and no husband. It is difficult to raise 1 child as a single parent let alone 6. It’s amazing the things children learn and understand at such a young age. I applaud VM Roberts for writing this book. Memoirs of a Girl From Suffolk can teach us all a lesson from the perspective of the child to the adult.
