Biography:
Tom Vandegrift retired after three decades in the insurance business during which he had four distinct careers. He was an underwriter for commercial accounts, a supervisor for data input operations, a training specialist designing, writing, and presenting technical programs, and a project manager in the data processing department. During his 2-year tour in the U.S. Peace Corps, he also wore many hats. He supervised Student Enterprise Projects, taught English, mathematics, business skills, and “Housekeeping and Maintenance,” led workshops for school administrators, served on an HIV/AIDS task force, and “invented” a solar oven, then taught villagers how to make them out of cardboard boxes and potato chip bags.
