In his early years, Oscar B. E. Baptiste served as an elementary school teacher and later as a police officer in his native country of Trinidad and Tobago before moving to Venezuela, then to the United States.
In New York, he earned a B.A. in English at Brooklyn College.
Among other things, he engaged in farming in Upstate New York and Virginia, worked with the Permanent Mission of Uganda to the United Nations for many years, and taught with New York City Public Schools for almost ten years.
