500 Things Not to Say in a Job Interview
by Mary Collins
Walk into any bookstore and you'll find dozens of books on all sorts of advanced job searching techniques. This is great for the hot-shots among us, but some of us need remedial help. For example, the distinction between appropriate and inappropriate responses to job interview questions is not always clear to some of us. Job seekers need detailed examples.
After years of botched interviews, I consider myself to be an expert on what not to say in a job interview. At one time or another, I have uttered most of the few phrases that other books warn about. There are an infinite number of possible incorrect responses to interview questions. I have selected a sample that covers a wide variety of interview no-nos. It is my hope that each reader will find himself or herself in these pages and be warned. If at least one interview is saved by these words, my job will be done.
1. Hi handsome!
2. A life of crime is not as glamorous as it looks in the movies.
3. I haven't actually done this job before, but how hard could it be?
4. I can't answer questions about my last company while the lawsuit is pending.
5. Sorry I'm late. I forgot about this interview.
