Volume III covers the history of USAFSS units in Alaska and the Far East -- in Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, Okinawa, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. Volume III also includes the history of USAFSS airborne units/operations (6988th SS, 6990th SS, 6994th SS, support to Rivet Top/Rivet Gym, etc.) during the Vietnam War.

Freedom Through Vigilance is the heretofore untold in-depth history of Air Force Security Service—the smallest, most hush-hush command in the Air Force (1948-1979). The book is dedicated to the tens of thousands of USAFSS silent warriors, who worked in anonymity around-the-clock at some 100 mostly isolated overseas outposts, exploiting targeted military communications during the Cold War. Consisting of 1,600+ pages (three volumes), Freedom Through Vigilance includes hundreds of first hand accounts from all ranks (generals to airmen) involved in creating USAFSS history. Males and females—intercept operators, linguists, cryptologists, analysts, communicators, clerks, maintenance technicians and commanders—describe their personal involvement.

  A Must-Read Book , 11/22/2010
Reviewer: Burton R. Knotts
This book documents the invaluable aid provided by our USAFSS to our Air Force on the battlefields of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The many interviews of the author, most quoted verbatim, with USAFSS personnel who were in Korea and Vietnam illustrate the thoroughness and detail of his research. Information in this book explains how the extremely accurate and rapid dissemination of intercepted mesages to our Air Force by the USAFSS were of tremendous aid to our pilots in helping them with their missions. Their work speeded up the ends of the wars, and saved lives of our service personnel.
