IT’S TIME TO BUILD: To connect the spiritual heritage of our past with our scientific knowledge of today. This book shows the way.

Abstract:
One of the gaps that divides our society today is the one between those who profess to be skeptics or secular, and those who call themselves Christian. This book seeks, through logical analysis, to bridge that gap. It justifies the acceptance of a spiritual basis for life to the first group and answers many of their objections. It reinterprets biblical traditions for that second group to include the scientific theories of creation and evolution. It justifies belief. This book builds the bridge across the gap from both sides so it will meet in the middle.

Christianity and science are complementary , 08/11/2005
Reviewer: E. Alan Long
By E. Alan Long CCN faith editor Let’s Bridge the Gap; by Gerald Ostroot; paperback; 217 pages with index, bibliography, glossary, basic doctrines, and books of the Bible with abbreviations; $14.95; Infinity Publishing.com. Holiday Island writer Gerald Ostroot grew up in the woods and streams of Minnesota, and learned the Biblical creation story as a youth. But, like most of his generation, the common pastoral lifestyle of the early 20th century gave way to today’s high tech, and Ostroot’s career as an engineer kept him in the forefront of many of those changes. In retirement, he has returned to his conviction that religion and science should compliment each other, resulting in this book. For all his logic, Ostroot has created an easy-to-comprehend book utilizing a wealth of resources ranging from the works of ancient Jewish historian Josephus and the Dead Sea Scrolls, to metaphysics and C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity. Perhaps the most important point that Ostroot makes is about time. We humans, bound in physical dimensions, are limited by time, perceiving it as a direct steady line from a beginning to an end. In chapter three, “The Creation; Genesis or Big Bang,” he writes: “We live only in the present. The past is just memory while we must wait for the future. But that limitation is imposed by our Universe. God is not bound by our Universe or by our time. For Him, our past and our future can co-exist with our present.” That sounds a lot like physicist Stephen Hawkins’ String Theory. Ostroot maintains that scientific interpretation of the Bible as though God is bound by time denies His eternal nature and makes Him solely a part of our Universe. Freedom from that box can enable the thoughtful reader to explore mankind’s various discoveries, particularly those of the past 100 years, and find that there truly is room in the Bible for science — and vice versa.

It is obvious to anyone who has researched for any subject that this book was not written overnight. There are many well referenced statements in it. I found it most helpful in my understanding of the Bible as a whole. It made many points concerning Jesus, the Christ that I had not thought of before. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling with Christianity and science.
