"Contrary to popular belief, lawyers are human. We all laugh at lawyer jokes. Many lawyers enjoy lawyer jokes as much or more as the next guy. However, remember the Golden Rule in dealing with lawyers: treat a lawyer (or any other human being, for that matter) as you would expect to be treated in the same or similar circumstances. If a lawyer screws up, chew him out. If a lawyer performs well, praise him. If a lawyer secures a favorable result, acknowledge and congratulate him. If the lawyer misses deadlines and is inattentive to your needs, let him know your dissatisfaction and/or get a new lawyer. Lawyers are human, and possess the good qualities and frailties of all human beings. It is best to recognize this fact in your relationship with any lawyer. Few lawyers will measure up to Perry Mason, but most will ably represent the profession."
