Preface An Unforgettable Love is the moving story of two young university students who, essentially, were all alone in the world and without any financial means.
The young man was a refugee from Germany, who had recently come to this country, and the young woman was an American, whose parents lived in another part of the country and had problems of their own. These young people were students at Temple University and they fell in love. Three major drives motivated them. They wanted to attain a life of profound and enduring love and happiness in this unruly world. They also wanted to become professional people, and render meaningful services for the betterment of society. Both felt passionately that together they would be able to give each other the loving encouragement and support that will enable them to attain their demanding goals.
This book tells how admirably they succeeded in less than eight years. Despite obstacles and delays, they both earned their Bachelor and Master Degrees -- she in mathematics and he in biochemistry.
Most importantly, they learned to live a life of true bliss and happiness. Every day was a loving and enjoyable experience. They also helped others, and brought happiness also into their lives. . And then, when they were finally established in their careers, and were making plans to have a family and to broaden the scope of their activities, tragedy struck in a cruel way. An Unforgettable Love is a heartbreaking and inspiring book, that will provide loving encouragement and strength to all those who seek love, happiness, and the attainment of their hopes, despite all obstacles.
Long after you have finished reading this book, its story will linger in your mind, and give you hope and determination to reach your own goals.
Chapter 1 A German U-Boat Torpedoes the British Liner S.S. Athenia on the Third Day of World War II
It was early in the evening, and the sun had just started its downward path toward the horizon. The evening was calm and beautiful, and the softness of the sunlight and its magnificent colors caught everybodys attention. Many passengers on this Cunard Line ship, on its way to New York, must have felt the same, because they were on deck enjoying the beautiful September evening.
At the railing, stood a young man, about 18 years old. He was not admiring the beautiful sunset. He was staring into the distance and his eyes were filled with tears. This was his first time away from home and from his family. He had left his parents and his younger brother in London, where he took the night train to Liverpool to board his ship. He was hoping that he and his family would soon be reunited.
At the railroad station. everything was in ominous darkness with only a minimum of light, and the train was crowded with solders. It was September 2, 1939, the second day of World War II.
Suddenly, a violent explosion interrupted this young mans thoughts The ships emergency sirens began to scream, and pandemonium took over the passengers, who just a moment ago presented an idyllic evening scene. Everyone was rushing to lifeboats, which were now being lowered into the water. The ship had just been torpedoed and was gradually sinking. The ship was the S.S. Athenia.
By the time all lifeboats were lowered into the water, it was already dark. It was a strange experience to be on the Atlantic Ocean in a lifeboat, instead of on a majestic passenger ship. Fortunately, the ocean was calm and the night was beautiful. From time to time, some of the apprehensive passengers would cry out, I see a German plane pursuing us. Actually, it was one of the stars in the clear sky above, that stirred the imagination of some passengers, who had never anticipated that a German U-boat would lay in wait of a passenger liner so early in the war.
We spent the entire night on the ocean, and it was getting cold. We began to wonder whether the outside world knew where our small lifeboat was. Finally, in the morning, a Norwegian tanker rescued us, and brought us to Galway, a small town in the West of Ireland.
