About the Book --------------------
This book provides general information about storage area networks (SANs), as well as material specific to the Brocade SilkWorm family of products. It can therefore be considered a reference work on the subject at large as well as being useful for customers deploying Brocade solutions. As the title implies, the focus is on general principles related to SAN design, from which specific configurations may be derived by the reader, rather than simply listing case studies or giving very specific cookbook configuration examples, or listing command syntaxes or support matrix limits which change from release to release. It is divided into different sections, each of which is focused at a different kind of reader.
The first section contains tutorials, such as an overview of SAN technology, a discussion of basic Fibre Channel concepts, and an introduction to advanced concepts such as Information Lifecycle Management and Utility Computing.
The second section provides practical information about using Brocade products in storage networks. The subjects covered include advice on overall network design, implementation, and ongoing management, though the primary focus is on design. This is a collection of best practices and guidelines, and can be used either as a reference section or read as a tutorial.
The third section has appendices with material such as standards information, internal product architectural details, information about specific Brocade hardware and software products, the glossary, and the index. It is exclusively intended for use as reference. Finally, the material in the first two sections is also summarized in the form of frequently asked questions (FAQ) and a study guide in the appendix section. This can be particularly helpful for readers studying for the Brocade Certified SAN Designer (BCSD) test.
