Chapter V: Strange Discovery
Carrying the broom resting over my shoulder like a gun, I marched across the yard. I came to an abrupt stop in front of the barn doors and stood at attention. I considered my mothers words for a moment, wondering what strange things lie in wait to be discovered under all that junk. And although I wasnt thrilled about cleaning out the barn, I did have this odd feeling that I just may find something that would point the way to the Zinker gold.
Taking a deep breath, I grabbed the barn doors, throwing them open with all my might. I planted my feet and squared my shoulders ready to fight the enemy. Lying before me was the biggest, most massive heap of junk Id ever seen. It looked like a crouching beast, ready to pounce on me at any moment. I raised my broom, I mean my weapon, in defense.
Youre no match for me beast! I shouted. I moved slowly to the left, then slowly to the right, trying to gain an advantage. I spied a short handled pitchfork hanging on the wall, just inside the door and making a split-second decision, I dropped the broom and lunged for the pointed weapon. As I grabbed the pitchfork, a breeze suddenly swept through the drafty old barn, sending dry straw swirling across the floor like tumble weeds. I raised my weapon and charged the beast stabbing at it without mercy.
That will teach you to snarl at metake this and take that! I circled around the huge pile, now confident that I had conquered the ugly monster. Now I can get some work done.
