“Liu Gonglian was a capable fellow, and could speak Russian. He said, ‘The representatives of the Red Army came here today and they want to speak to us. Please welcome comrade Bodlev!’
Bodlev spoke again, ‘Chinese friends, you have suffered a lot; so have we. Our Party and the Soviets are representing the interests of the poor. Now we are the masters of the country and going to build a happy socialist society. But imperialists, reactionary Tsarist officers, landlords and capitalists, they colluded with each other and will not resign to their defeat. They are organizing reactionary troops and want to exterminate our Soviet State Power, to restore the old order. So, comrades, imperialists and the Whites are our common enemy. Only by eliminating the Whites, defeating the foreign invaders, can we live our life. All poor are in one family. Right now the only road lies in front of us is to join the Red Army to fight our common enemy. Do you agree?’ His speech drew applause.”
“A man from town came in and explained to them “workers all over the world are in one family. Right now the Russian workers have launched a revolution aiming to improve the life of proletarians including Chinese workers. Now, you, the two thousand Chinese laborers cannot go back to China, nor is there anyone to take care of you. The only way out is to join the Red Army like the Russian workers.” So after that, all two thousand joined the Red Army even though they did not understand the real meaning of revolution.”
The people of the Soviet Union remember them. In 1988, the Soviet Union-China Friendship Association invited Ren’s son, Ren Dongliang and his wife to visit the USSR. In May 1989, Mr. M. Gorbachev, the President of the USSR, representing the Soviet Government, awarded Ren a Red Flag Medal for his outstanding meritorious service in the Civil War. In the city of Samarkhan, Uzbekistan, many streets were named with Chinese revolutionaries’ names. This kind of militant friendship cemented with the blood of many martyrs, tested by history, will be eternal, going beyond history, space and border lines.”
