There will be times when you wonder if what you are doing has any value. The enemy will speak in your ear and make you question if what you contribute to life is more than folded laundry, swept floors and diapered babies. You might be faced with a despondence that makes you feel like nothing you do matters or makes a difference. I pray that if you find yourself in this place, God will put someone in your path to remind you the eternal nature of our work as mothers and wives.
First, remember the husband who finds comfort and solace in your arms couldn’t be what God has called him to be if he was only half. Without you, the perfect other half God created, he is only half; half as strong, half as confident, half as focused, half as driven. You give him so much more than you can know. We can never doubt the need our husbands have for us. Often we are the only voice in the night fighting the demons that attack our husband’s integrity, convictions, and zeal. We are often the only one who sees them at their weakest point. The ministry you have to your husband can be of such eternal value, you may never know.
You must be diligent to pray for your husband. You must be battling for him, day and night. Because as he becomes more and more of the husband and father God has called him to be, he becomes more and more of a threat to the enemy who desires to steal, kill and destroy. You are on the front lines, as much as any solider. Don’t find yourself unarmed in the heat of the battle, or caught unaware. Don’t let Satan ever tell you that your relationship to your husband is unimportant or makes little difference. In reality, YOU are the first and last line of defense for your husband. Have a strong defense.
Your marriage can and should be your witness to unbelievers. The metaphor of Christ being the bridegroom and the church, his bride, was not a pretty metaphor. God wanted us to understand the mighty love and service that can be done through marriage. In a world where the divorce rate is constantly on the rise and commonplace in the church, we must stand as an example of what God intended marriage to be. Just as Christ loved his church and gave himself up for her, we too should be willing to die daily for our husbands. We must put aside our selfishness and sinfulness and look to Christ as our example of what we should be for our husbands. If you ever doubt or question your role as a wife, look to the marriage of Christ and His beloved. If we are aiming to love our husbands as He has loved us, we will never miss the mark of marital bliss.
Don’t expect your husband to be the only one following Jesus’ example of how to love his bride; we, too, are called to this standard.
There will be times when you are tired and worn out by the multitude of never ending tasks it takes to run a home and raise children. I have found Satan is at his strongest when I am the most sleep deprived. I must be ever vigilant for the arrows he throws at me when I am weak. I could easily listen to his lies when I feel I have done more than my share of duties and still have several pages of tasks left. When I feel under appreciated and overworked, I am at my most vulnerable to these lies. It is these nights I will often sneak into my little ones’ bedrooms and just listen. I listen to their gentle breaths and their sleepy murmurs. Those little souls are of more value to our Great Shepherd than any job I could ever have. They are more precious than any scientific discovery I could find, or peace treaty I could arrange. The very hairs on their heads are more valuable to Him than any millionaire’s CEO salary. How easy it is to lose sight of this in the doldrums of the mundane. Sisters, the yoke that has been placed on the backs of mothers is of such importance. Our children come into this world moldable and vulnerable. They are a virtual blank slate. It is our awesome responsibility to lead them to the cross and teach them to bring glory to the Almighty. Is there a more challenging or important job out there?
