Around the first part of February my family and I were all standing in the kitchen conversing about this and that. (This is where all important conversations happen in our house. We have nearly solved the Health Care crisis in that very room!) During the course of a conversation that was about a mom in our community and her fight with cancer, for some reason, I decide to say something about this lump. It was out of my mouth before I could stop it. My step-mom and oldest (16 yr old) daughter got a little upset. They wanted me to call the very next day to make an appointment. I assured them, so I thought; that I had done a little research and that there was nothing to worry about. About a week prior I did look up calcium deposits and felt there was nothing I should worry about.
There are very few secrets in our house. There are kids, family and friends coming and going constantly, so it is a little hard to keep things quiet. My sixteen year old daughter, she is my worrier, after a week of reminding me to call the doctor and make an appointment, decides she needs to enlist my 14 year old daughter and bring her in for back up.
You see my 14 year old can be a bit of a drill sergeant. She likes things done a certain way and orderly. A lot of times she doesn’t mind letting you know if things aren’t in order. I have no doubt that if she joined the military she would be sitting in the White House just inside a few years of duty. Brice (my 14 yr old) marches right up to me like a mother ready to scold a child. My 16 year old is right behind her. Brice almost barks at me “MOM! Do you have a lump?” I stand there stunned by her tone of voice toward me, the fact that she is still moving toward me, and feeling like I am in deep trouble, I stammer “Wh-What?” I ask. Actually, I heard her. I was trying to come up with a quick witty response. She repeats herself with a look that says “You’re going down!”
I laugh. It’s my first line of defense. Ask my kids. When I am trying to discipline them, they know if they find a way to make me laugh it’s all over with. On the other hand, in this sort of situation I think it really annoys my family.
