Taking a break from my art, I did all the things young boys do in the summers in the country. I rode my bike, went adventuring in the woods, swung on grapevines on the mountain, flew kites, and walked three miles to a swimming pool not too far from our house, soaped windows, threw dried corn on peoples front windows and knocked over shocks of cornstalks on Halloween, went to Sunday school at the little white Church on Mt. Pleasant road and “begged for forgiveness.”
Mom and me managed to catch the City bus sometimes on Saturday to go to Town. She would drop me off at the Embassy theatre to see Cowboy and Indian movies while she went shopping. Then she would pick me up at the theatre in time to catch the City bus back home.
The Embassy Theatre had Double Features and John Wayne was in almost all of the war movies. He was in the Flying Tigers, the Fighting Seabees, Back to Bataan, Sands of Iwo Jima, and The Flying Leathernecks. Later on I read that he wasn’t even in the War. Some kind of injuries kept him out. . . .Just think, “The Duke” was really 4F.
