Abstract:
Roberta Garcia has commissioned Jacob Ross to write an expose on her prominent employer, Rev. Alfonzo Small. The Rev. Small, a decorated Vietnam War hero and pastor of the largest African-American church in the state, retaliates by planning to have Roberta silenced. Small’s plans are shattered when his hired assassins – a psychotic female and her two male accomplices – mistakenly murder Roberta’s older sister, Shirley. Jacob exposes two other key players, lawyer Kenneth McBade and the state’s governor, Warren Dell. Decorated heroes, Small, McBade and Dell served together in Vietnam. Jacob and Roberta go on the run for their lives to uncover information.

OOSA Online Book Club gave 4 out of 5 stars to: The Pedestal by Harvey Butaleon Degree Sr. Roberta Garcia, a young Hispanic woman, works for the senior minister at Fruit of Life church, Reverend Alfonzo Small. After eavesdropping on numerous phone conversations, Roberta finds out the Reverend Small is involved in some shady business. Roberta is seeking advice about copy writing a book that she is planning on having written about the shady preacher. Unfortunately, for her, she seeks advice from someone who is just as deep into the corruption as the pastor: lawyer Kenneth McBade. Small is warned by the lawyer and Small sends his "clean up" crew to take care of the problem. Reverend Small is also warned by Roberta's sister, Shirley, who does not agree with Roberta and tells of her sister's plan to expose him. Roberta hires Jacob Ross for the job. Jacob Ross is the author of a book published the year before. After a TV interview about his book went sour, Ross was viewed as "the devil in the flesh" by Reverend Small. In order to gain the information needed, Jacob and Roberta set out to expose Small, McBade and Warren Dell, the governor, while trying to stay ahead of the game. "The Pedestal" is filled with an array of characters. Harvey Butaleon Degree, Sr.'s descriptions made me feel as if I was right there as everything happened or like I was watching a movie. Although it started out slow, it picked up and finished strong. Reviewed by: Sophia
