Abstract:
Ensign Sam Gaunt, a carrier fighter pilot, is awarded a medal. Secretly, however, Sam feels that if the truth were known, he could be court martialed. Sam's life is constantly in danger, not only from the Japanese but also from someone aboard his carrier who wants him dead. His division leader about whom Sam knows sordid facts, another fighter pilot in the squadron with whom Sam has had a rivalry over a girl and the air group's leading chief who has lost money because of supposed bad advice from Sam, all have reason to be secretly his enemy.
