Abstract:
This is a story about two white female police officers who worked as partners in the city of Detroit. I was one of them. My partner and I were involved in a police shooting in January of 1996, an incident where fellow officer Patrick Prohm was fatally shot. This book describes the aftermath of the shooting, and the hell that the City of Detroit put my partner and I through: Injustice, discrimination, harassment, numerous violations of the union contract, embarrassment, and mental anguish. My partner and I thought the incident was traumatic enough. Wait until you see what came after it. I pray that no other officer, anywhere in this nation, should be treated the way we were by the city we were sworn to protect. This is my story.…

  Reality Check , 03/13/2004

As a mother of five, grandmother of twelve, widowed lady who worked thirty years in the judical atmosphere, I was completely unprepared for the "REALITY" of this book. The pride, passion, and pain that is a "REALITY" of police officer's everyday life made me very proud to know the kind of people that would take on a officer's job! I would recommend this book to population of all ages, both male and female, who a "REALITY" check every once in a while.

This book carries a potent message about life "behind the Blue Wall" and the secrets kept within the department. The unjustices and prejudice against the officers' experience is heartbreaking and eye-opening. The political games played by the departments are glaring in their stark exposure. I would, however, like to see the book more "filled out" by revealing more about the personalities and "personhoods" of the officers. More personal behind the scenes, if you will. This story is one that should be told to the public through a movie. The tragedy is that it is not being properly marketed. I urge everyone to read this book!

Donna, Your story in Shattered Badges, Broken Hearts, and mine in Badge 3483, A True Story, have great similarities, down to almost the exact same words Dr. Schiener said to me in 1988. You have given civilians an eye opener to what the department can be like. I was fortunate to have the support of the union, which helped immensely. Thank you for telling your story. I don't know if "enjoyed" is the word people would use for reading your book or mine, but they will certainly be enlightened, and know the truth. Your book should be required reading before anyone joins any police academy. Sincerely, J. Charlene Genther
