Does it still exist, Penn’s Black Forest? In 1954 it did, rediscovered by two brothers. Bear Hollow describes their fight to preserve it.

Abstract:
It’s 1954. Times are changing in Pennsylvania’s Steam Valley. The company town owner, a tanner and strip mine operator, learns of virgin timber and soft coal on remote Bear Mountain. Tensions grow when his rival, a forester and returning war hero, outbids him for it. Bear Mountain, however, is the domain of a renegade trapper. A half-breed squatter, the vicious former WWI scout will allow no one to log or mine “his” land. In Steam Valley live three attractive women...vying for the love of two strong, competitive men. There is much to gain, and loves and lives to lose.

I couldn't put this book down! If you have any interest in small-town Pennsylvania life you will love this book. Mr. Cochran has done an excellent job of storytelling, if nothing else. After reading this book, I am making plans to head to Steam Valley and climb Bear Hollow for a look around myself.

I've been a fan of this part of Pennsylvania for many years. Stopped at the "Turkey Ranch" restaurant many times on our way through Steam Valley. I was not aware of the story of Bear Hollow. And I'm not sure if it is true or not but the author sure brought it to life. I recommend this book highly.
