This book is an outgrowth of my own personal experience with a vasectomy, or in my case, vasectomies, and what can go wrong.

Abstract:
This book is an outgrowth of my own personal experience with a vasectomy, or in my case, vasectomies, and what can go wrong. Some might claim that mine is an extreme example, despite the fact that a good deal of evidence shows otherwise. My experience turned into what has truly been the most significant medical situation I have ever faced, and one that has struck fear in the hearts (and other places) of every man I have described it to. Hopefully, you can benefit from this knowledge, which I gained the hard way….

Important information for vasectomy patients , 02/26/2004
Reviewer: K. Roberts
Whether you are a man or his partner considering this type of birth control, read this book first. This is Hauber's heartrending story of a "Simple Procedure" gone wrong. What is amazing is the realization of how often post-vasectomy problems occur. In Hauber's book, he writes with humor, pathos and much needed information about his situation and the different methods he used to tackled it. I have heartily recommended this book to everyone that is thinking about, or has had a vasectomy.

“I know many men will benefit from reading this book.... Kevin writes from his own experience with great clarity, humor, and a growing respect for the awesome complexity of our human bodies.... Kevin...transforms tragedy into a bright shining light by illuminating a subject which has been kept quiet for so very long.” Dr. Diane L. Stern, M.D.

“Kevin Hauber’s odyssey of suffering after having a vasectomy reinforces the concern repeatedly expressed in my publications over the last quarter century about the potential severe consequences stemming from failure of men to receive proper informed consent about the risks. In view of the magnitude of vasectomania, it would be a disservice for physicians and public health officials to ignore his experience and that of many others on the grounds they are ‘just anecdotes’.” Dr. H. J. Roberts, FACP, Author of Is Vasectomy Worth the Risk? A Physician’s Case Against Vasectomania (1993) and Is Vasectomy Safe? Medical, Public Health and Legal Implications (1979).

From the wife of a vasectomy patient , 02/29/2004

“It is amazing what we, as wives, are willing to subject our husbands to for the sake of our own convenience. Please consider all the research before deciding on vasectomy for your birth control choice. I certainly had no idea daily pain was even a remote possibility for my husband. The pain, and all that went with it, nearly destroyed our relationship. Thank God a skilled surgeon was able to restore what the vasectomist did...but we were the lucky ones. Thousands are still in pain daily, with no relief in sight. Are you willing to risk this for yourself or the person you love most in the world? I challenge you to read the data Kevin has gathered, and any other information you can find. Then make an informed decision--one based on the facts--not from selfishness or convenience. I wish we had. Lisa, wife of a vasectomy patient, Georgia

  A man speaks out , 02/29/2004

“As a former college athlete and someone who has previously been extremely active, my vasectomy surgery has changed my life.... I’m trying to help other people to not make the same mistake I did. I’m not ashamed of my problem, and when people ask me about my experience, I refer people to the www.dontfixit.org web site. It is the best resource I know. For all of you that have not had a vasectomy procedure, all I can say is three simple words: Don’t do it!” Tim, a vasectomy patient, Ohio

  Man to man , 02/29/2004
Reviewer: Greg
“This book does not only chronicle his agonizing story, but helps guys like me know that there are many others out there suffering also. This condition is more common than some would have you believe. I think Kevin's experience and opinions have kept me from making some terrible decisions (like additional surgery) on my hopeful road to recovery.... The information from this book is a must read before undertaking a vasectomy and might be your only chance to see that there could be a less happy side to the procedure. Unfortunate vasectomy victims should read this book just to find alternatives ways of dealing with the chronic pain; as well as the risks associated with those alternatives. Thanks Kevin, the information you have compiled in this book and on your web site have given me some perspective on this nightmare that I don't believe I could have gotten anywhere else” Greg, a vasectomy patient, Florida

“What I would tell men considering vasectomy is that you are taking a chance with your health and happiness. If you are among the percentage of men who will have trouble, you could be looking at years of pain and thousands of dollars spent trying to undo the damage you paid to have done to you. If you have recently had a vasectomy, know that there is a statute of limitations in most states for lawsuits, so you should get this info and go to an attorney, armed with the statistics in this book, ASAP. The statistics are publicized in enough professional journals that no urologist could credibly claim that they haven't read about the dangers of the procedure. Also, I would encourage men who have chronic pain resulting from their vasectomies to be as vocal as possible to raise awareness and to bring shame to the medical community, which is supposed to help, not hurt, its patients.” Doug, a vasectomy patient, Oregon

But is it factual or not? , 09/17/2006
Reviewer: Stewie Cole
Most of the reviewers above have contributed to the book - naturally they will give it 5 stars. Therefore their testimonies cannot be considered to be impartial. It's interesting that the vast majority of the religious anti birth control sites who advocate natural family planning quote extensively from this book, and Hauber himself advocates natural family planning. But is there any real truth to the claims made by the book? Do the published medical papers quoted from actually say what Hauber says they do? No, in short. They most certainly don't!! There is a site that compares the quote in the book to the actual quote in the original study. Also it examines the evidence behind the claims. Have a look at www.dontfixit.info to see the difference between the claim and the original quote. Basically the vast majority of quotes used have been taken out of context, whole sentences added or removed, and in some cases the entire quote is made up and attributed to a study or author. If you choose to buy the book or not is obviously your choice, but be aware that the claims made in it are not backed up by facts, and it remains mostly personal opinion. The book is not written to be of benefit to men thinking of vasectomy, or supporting men with problems. It's written purely to fit into a genre. I would not make an important life changing decision based on the false claims made by this book, and the religious anti birth control control freaks that are associated with it. Buy it if you want - just be aware of the fact that he's made most of it up to fit allow the book to fit with a personal viewpoint.

  excellent for a mortgage man , 07/17/2008
Reviewer: Dana
Kevin is trying to help all men out there. If you believe him, great, if you don't then you should get a vasectomy to prove your point. You see, I'm the kind of vasectomized man who only looks out for himself. I admire men like Kevin, he has given alot of his life energy to this cause, at the least, he deserves respect.
