The ending will drive you nuts because you're psyched to know what happens next. If you ever wanted to make contact with extraterrestrials, piss off the CIA, and kiss the mundane goodbye, this is the book.

I was surprised to find something new under the sun in science fiction. Reckless Faith may be reminiscent of Contact and other pseudo-religious science fiction fantasy stories, but don't be fooled by the title or the genre. Though the characters do make a telepathic connection with an alien life form, the result is not a deeper understanding of our oneness with the universe, but brazen theft of government property and a whiskey soused, shoot 'em up adventure that would leave Dirty Harry reeling. Kantrowitz has an intriguing sense of character development, and knows how to keep the plot moving. Though readers with a more pacifist view of the universe may be unnerved at times, it is well worth the read.

Even though I'm not normally a Sci-Fi reader, I couldn't put the book down. There are some editing errors/inconsistencies and somewhat of an overuse of gratuitous language, but overall it is filled with adventure, suspense, intrigue and is just plain fun to read. I got so wrapped up in it I can't wait until the sequel to find out what happens next!

An alien lands on your doorstep and offers to build a spaceship for you. Do you: A) Learn from the alien and help the human race evolve through some really boring process involving an immense black slab and then hand over the alien to the proper authorities? B) Build a ship, steal as much weaponry, food and booze as you can find while avoiding various government agencies and then take off for the stars? If you answered B, buy the book. I recommend reading it while smoking a strong Latakia blend and drinking your favorite bourbon.

  Unique Sci-Fi novel , 06/18/2004

"Reckless Faith" brings together a motley crew of characters (literally) and drops them squarely into the kind of situation you might see on an old episode of "The Outer Limits", but takes it to the next level. This is a sort of origination story for sophisticates. John is a CAD designer whose vaguely unsatisfying life leads him to brave a life of adventure; Ray is a police officer shaken by a recent loss, and Ari is an old college friend who has reemerged to awaken repressed feelings of both longing and concern for her impulsive behavior. The three of them find themselves confronted with an enigma when an apparently extraterrestrial pod lands nearby while they spend a weekend in the New Hampshire woods. One thing leads to another, and soon they are building a spaceship for themselves to ride back to where the pod came from. They are soon joined by an astronomer and a pair of radio technicians from a SETI-like organization. The groups is faced with the decision to risk everything for a mission even the pod's lone inhabitant, an artificial intelligence named Seth, can't explain to them. When the government gets wind of their project, things get really complicated. The story is filled with intriguing characters and a fast-moving plot, and while some might find the ethical choices the protagonists make as they prepare for their journey to be troubling, it is a testament to the author's abilities that he draws you in and gets you thinking about what would you'd do in their shoes. Some readers may find the detailed references to firearms to be heavy at times. One of the more intriguing aspects of the book is how plausible the would-be spacetravellers seem: amateurish and unsure, but determined to see their plan through. This makes it easier to identify with them in their voyage of discovery then the square-jawed science-fiction heroes of old. All in all, this is a good story from an emerging writer whose creativity and plotting won't disappoint those seeking an enjoyable tale.
