“A captivating book, set against the historical background of the Old and the New World. These are truly inspiring tales.”
Charles N. Brower,
Former Legal Advisor to the White House.

Abstract:
What was it like to live with nightly air attacks and gnawing hunger under Nazi tyranny? Under the Russian occupation? Or as a refugee? Captivating anecdotes capture a young woman’s experiences in the Old World and the New, where she continues her studies and eventually marries. Whether keeping cool in the tropics or roughing it at sea with three men and a baby, her tales reflect warmth and wisdom. When left penniless and divorced in San Francisco, challenges begin in earnest, but her love of life is not dampened. With compelling humor and courage she rebuilds her life. A fast-paced, exhilarating story, inspiring and true.

  An Exhilarating Read , 06/22/2004

This is not your conventional memoir. It’s a fast-paced, poignant, serious, funny, and inspiring saga of a girl’s journey from war-time Germany to success as a writer in America. I couldn’t put it down. Possibly the most fascinating aspect to us as provincial Americans is the inside glimpse of what it was like living under Hitler’s iron thumb. And then her family’s experiences escaping the Russians after the war will curdle your blood. Her life in the U.S. wasn’t nearly so dramatic, but the variety of experiences will keep you wondering: what next? Underlying everything in the book is its humanity, and her living example of how pluck and perseverance really can lead to a happy life. In short, it’s one of the best books I’ve read in years. I couldn't put this memoir down. As if this weren't unusual enough, I was deeply impressed by the way McIntosh's positive attitude didn't come over as smarmy or forced. Remarkable as well was her smooth and impressive command of English, which is not her native tongue. I've added the author to the pantheon of women I deeply admire.

Attention all who want to enjoy a heroine and survivor who truly reveals her challenging life as it happened. Readers can only find strength of purpose for themselves as they marvel at what one determiined dame can accomplish by consistently putting one foot in front of the other. Most importantly she had joy in her heart and so will the reader. Go for it!

I was fascinated by your book, Live, Laugh and Learn. I have known and admired you for over thirty-five years but had no idea of your life in Deutschland. You were and are very graceful in the manner in which you handle your charm and intelligence. Your writing reflects these qualities to the nth degree! I am making these comments , which were unsolicited, to encourage others to read your book and am certain that they will be equally rewarded. Your long time friend and fan, Ernie
