Abstract:
This love story centers around two people, plantation owner, John Walker and a young girl named Kayse.

As early as the 1840's, a storm of unrest was slowly building that would eventually lead to the Civil War. John Walker was attending a slave auction down at Newberry when he witnessed a young slave girl, Kayse, being treated disrespectfully by the auctioneer. Without meaning to, he took a bid and bought her. So disgusted he was with the auction that day, he swore he’d never attend another one.

Kayse’s mother was half-white, and Kayse, herself, had been fathered by a white man which made her more white than black Kayse proved to be a hard worker doing more than expected. She was also stubborn and strong willed. She stood up for herself even with those of her own kind who looked down on her as not being of pure blood.
