Forget the glamour of shining armor. The dark ages were more about mud huts, hunger, ignorance, and death than anything else. There was no hope for Philip an orphan in a tiny Cornwall village. He started as an apprentice in the new skill of stonemason, but was whisked off to be trained for the army. Because there was no education or broadening experience in the dark ages does not mean that people’s brains did not have any capacity.
