Abstract:
Eleven year old Rachel dreams of becoming a ballerina, but money is tight during the Great Depression. Her parents jump at the opportunity to buy a teahouse, but their new business plunges them into debt. Rachel fears that she will never achieve her dream. Despite the family’s poverty, a world of love and security is woven into the lives of Rachel and her sister and brother. Mama’s Judaic values and Papa’s comforting presence guide and sustain them. Rachel remains undaunted in her quest to make her dancing dream come true.
