She’s weathered the squalls of despair. He’s still riding the storms. Was it chance, or destiny, that led them on a journey neither sought nor prepared for?

Abstract:
A story of struggle and resilience, rooted in truth and woven into a fresh fictional tapestry that embraces all the qualities and maladies innate in the human psyche. Widowed early, Amber is content, in solitude. Soothed by a quirky affinity with Nature, and trust in a larger purpose, she also has a reckless, belligerent side. Ben is an airline pilot turned successful writer caught up in the glitz of L.A. and its pitfalls at the cost of family, health, and direction. He’s brilliant, crotchety, and determinedly pragmatic in the face of life’s turns. They meet by chance and embark on a journey neither was seeking, with an edge-of-the-seat ending that leaves the reader stunned.

Not Your Ordinary Love Story , 08/16/2007
Reviewer: Pauline Hager
Although Rainy Day People comes under the genre of fiction, this story is based on real-life happenstance. Susan Haley transports her readers on an incredible journey that runs the gauntlet of life’s emotions and does not stop until the story ends. Ms. Haley’s love of the ocean and the majestic beauty of the land, her love of animals, whether it’s a wild bear, a snake, or a six-week-old kitten, is manifested in the persona of Amber, the main character. Very briefly, Amber, a widow, meets Ben Riley by chance. Together they embark on a trip, which takes them away from her home and the warm waters of Florida to bone-chilling Maine. Amber’s love for Ben sustains him as he is dying from cancer, which is unbeknown to Amber and the basis of their conflict. This heart-warming love story ends like a thriller novel. I strongly recommend it. Keep the magic, Susan Haley. May you always have rainbows.

You Gotta Read This Book! , 11/25/2005
Reviewer: Kathy Killam
I loved this book! It was like meeting two people, and a little cat, that I grew to know and care about. Have you ever read a book you hated to finish because you would miss the characters inside? This one was like that. It made me laugh, cry, and read on well past my bedtime just to see what would happen next. I will be looking for more books by Susan Haley. Excellent book!

Rainy Day People is Phenomenal!!! , 11/27/2005
Reviewer: Connie Robbins
Much of what passes itself off as true life fiction today can't even hold a candle to RDP. There's nothing flashy or unreal about it, and I guarantee you that you'll find something strongly familiar within its painfully and most assuredly lovingly written pages. I, too, look for more from Ms. Haley. She is an extraordinary storyteller, indeed.

Rainy Day People is Captivating , 01/12/2006
Reviewer: Michel Martinez
Could not put this novel down, read it in 3 days! Rainy Day People, captured my imagination and allowed me to feel like I was actually living in the story. I smiled and cryed throughout the novel and actually felt a closeness to all of the characters including the little "Tag" cat. Sue Haley is an exceptionally talented writer. We need more stories from her.

  A Book to be Savoured , 01/13/2006
Reviewer: May Smith
Rainy Day People is a magical weave of truth and fiction. It is poignant and thought provoking, yet at times humorously down to earth. The strong story lets you laugh and cry along with the author who has a wonderful style that is uncluttered by cliches and platitudes Susan Haley uses words like a skilled artist uses her brush to paint beautiful pictures. You will find yourself reading certain passages over and over again to truly absorb their beauty This is a book to be savoured

  SUPERB , 01/16/2006
Reviewer: Carolyn Drumm
I was immediately caught up by this story of a middle aged widow who follows her heart into a relationship with a mysterious stranger. Based on real life happenings, this book is the kind that is hard to put down. The writing is fluid, the imagery vivid, and the characters fairly jump off the page. The author’s emotional honesty and intensity sweeps the reader along on a stirring journey of self-discovery. This one goes on my list of all time favorites.

  Great Book! , 01/21/2006
Reviewer: Ann Miller
This book brings back the desire to sit and read a novel. It has all the trappings of a best seller with the right promotion. It's sad that new and unknown novelists don't get the exposure they deserve...

  She Loves It! , 01/21/2006

I bought this book for my wife, and I haven't seen her for two days! Finally, she finished it, and she has tears and a smile on her face at the same time when she talks about it. She wants me to read it, so I think I will. Anyway, thanks, Susan Haley, for writing a book my wife could enjoy reading while I read the newspaper in peace!

  A woman of rainbows , 07/26/2006
Reviewer: Dahris
This book parallels the life of its author, a survivor in the face of devastating loss. Amber, like the author, has lost her beloved husband much too early. The author plumbs the depths of human emotion - love, joy, loss, grief, and the struggle to survive in the face of her pain. Given a second chance, Amber makes the most of it and the story is fulfilling. A beautiful piece of work.

  Teases Reality , 10/16/2006
Reviewer: Bobby Hooks
I enjoyed this book emmensely. The characters found their way into a corner of my mind that teased reality. It's almost as if I knew them from a time before and was able to observe their inner challenges. It is obvious to me these characters have lived before in another realm where only the Author has sensed the desires of their hearts. However, she has graciously led them to the reader by lacing together their experiences with hers and the readers. To be able to convey the feelings and experiences of others so tactfully generates a desire to come to know the characters whether they are real or fictional. In fact, the Author has successfully convinced the reader to ponder and seek solutions to help them in their quest. From the beginning to the end, tenderness and excitement has been sewn toghether with the thread of passion. A good read.

Second reading as good as the first! , 09/20/2009
Reviewer: Shirley Ann Parker
Synchronicity is real and these two middle-aged characters didn't meet by chance. Coming from opposite ends of the spectrum, they get on each other's nerves and still love each other as they fight the fight of their lives. Their relationship is funny, delightful and full of bumps in the road. Widowed, free spirit Amber sees rainbows and a mysterious fox, messages from her past and harbingers of her destiny. Grumpy Ben, terrified by what's eating at his physical body, learns to see the world with new eyes, as Amber drives them with wild abandon from Florida up into new surroundings in Maine. There are a few "bad words" that reflect their reality, but don't be put off. Susan writes lyrically and with great beauty and appreciation for nature and the landscape. The ending will knock your socks off!
