When Men Move to the Basement, a collection of humorous essays written as the author moved from California’s city life to northern rural Maine, before retiring to Virginia with her Maine Guide husband.

Abstract:
In 1980, Marion Alexander married Master Maine Guide Dick Higgins, moving with him from California to northern rural Maine, just a few miles from the town that originally inspired the TV show, Northern Exposure. After nearly 20 years, they retired together to southwest Virginia, where Marion began writing and performing humorous essays describing the culture shock of that 3,000 mile move, and the further acclimation to retirement. “The experience of two people spending twenty-four/seven in one small space is not to be belittled—only those of us who have retired truly know what that can mean!”

Reviewer: Becky Mushko
If you like Erma Bombeck-type humor, you'll enjoy this collection of essays about the adventures and misadventures of a couple who meet in California, move to Maine, and eventually settle in Franklin County, Virginia. WHEN MEN MOVE TO THE BASEMENT is a must-read for every middle-aged married woman. Bruce Rae's illustrations are the icing on the cake! --Becky Mushko, author of PEEVISH ADVICE
