Abuse in a boys’ home, mean streets of Chicago, a dysfunctional family—he was tough and wary. But in his heart he always knew there was a better way, a better life.

THE DROPOUT is an inspirational story of a boy, who despite his sometimes tragic childhood, manages not just to pursue, but to attain his goals in life. It chronicles the pitfalls, disappointments, revelations, and love, of his journey into early adulthood. From the boyhood newspaper routes to the tours of Marine service, he strives to succeed, never giving up. He encounters what seems to be more than his share of obstacles to go beyond survival, and to triumph.

I grew up hearing some of these stories. My Uncle had a hard life, all the way up to his death in December of 2007. But I'll never forget what he taught me. He used to tell me, when I was feeling like I couldn't do something, "You either do it or you don't. Don't blame outside forces for what you can control." And thanks to these books, I will always remember what he taught me- If you want something, go after it wholeheartedly.

Eric was my high school teacher. I learned a lot of life lessons from him. I was hoping I could track him down and talk to him. He talked about his travels to Mexico and inspired me to go after my own dream. I did and wrote a book about it. I was hoping I could give him a copy as a gesture of gratitude. I've got his book, though. It's a good read.
