The depths of Sherman’s evil deeds are equaled only in his devotion to his family. This multi-generational novel gives up its secrets in The Letter.

Abstract:
The Letter, set in Perry County, Indiana, is about five generations of the Ollie and Sherman Willingham family. The horrors they are forced to live with are thought to be known only to the two of them; when in fact, a child knows. Privy to the murderous environment in which she lives, this child cannot find peace in her shortened life. The Letter, hidden away in Ollie’s journal, reveals things that almost destroy the sanity of their son, Clarence. This family learns early on that sometimes good people do bad things for the right reasons.

Reviewer: Hickory Husker
Veteran writer Hurst (Red Coat, Through the Eyes of a Teacher I and II) offers her strongest effort to date in The Letter, a historical fiction work that is set in southern Indiana. The book does a very credible job of relating day-to-day life of the period while spinning its way through a number of sub plots that weave a tale across five generations of family members. The result is a true page turner that makes this a very quick and satisfying read. Anyone that has ever taken a drive through southern Indiana will appreciate that Hurst's greatest accomplishment with The Letter is to give story and voice to the otherwise silent hills and hamlets of that region.
