During the Potato Famine in Ireland, the McKelvies must choose starvation or a dangerous voyage to America. McKelvy’s daughters are torn apart to live vastly different lives for years.

Abstract:
The risk of death faced them either way. The McKelvies chose the constant roar and force of the ocean in a “coffin” ship to America over starvation in Ireland.

The widowed Sally and daughters struggle for mere existence in impoverished nineteenth century America’s The Five Point’s slum in New York City. No Irish need apply. Later, two sisters desperately long to restore their broken family after they are torn apart. For years they experience very different lives. Devastating losses, a Civil war, a healing, a coming together from Separate Paths.

Here is an opportunity to read a really good book. During the years of the potato famine in Ireland the lives of a family are torn asunder as they leave their beloved homeland and travel in a "coffin" ship to escape to America. Their struggle for existence in the 1800s in New York's slum district is remarkably told and fast paced. The two sisters travel in very divergent paths always with the goal of trying to reunite the family. I am a very slow and deliberate reader and through the first three chapters I could not find a place to put the book down. Once I returned to the book's pages the pace quickened again and the twists and turns had me sellbound. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves history laced in fiction.
