A shaman’s ghost steals toy soldiers from a Cambodian orphan. Horrible occurrences unexplained beg questions: “Will there be a Last Great Battle? And, if so, how will it be won?”

Abstract:
Generations of farmers planted their grain on aboriginal battlefields like Rein Hillman did. Decades of spring plowings saw aboriginal weapons spring from the earth, long before an archaeologist came to identify them. Legends about shamans’ ghosts were whispered around Indians’ fires before they were written into books; and mysterious misfortunes still lurk unexplained in the haymows and attics of old farms. Somewhere, an orphan boy still asks the shaman’s ghost, “Will there really be a Last Great Battle.” Knowing what I know about the Hillman Farm, I wonder too.

My mother has written a few books. I have read a few of the few. I read Saconk (which I can't pronounce even with the author's help) and I liked it. The interesting part was that the values that you make as a reader keep changing. Heroes turn into villans and then sometimes back into heroes. It all depends on whose eyes you are looking through. There are plenty of characters and sometimes they leave before you want them to (or you leave before you want to). It is a melancholy tale when taken as a whole, but it kept me reading to find out what was going to happen next.
