No one knew if Alex Holloman’s disappearance, in 1974, was the result of foul play. However, 27 years later, the mystery is finally unraveled by America’s Foremost Magician – John Michaels.

Abstract:
In 1973, Alex Holloman got a job as a courier and met a wonderful lady. Suddenly, his world fell apart; his parents were killed and then he inexplicably disappeared.

When America’s Foremost Magician, John Michaels, agreed to perform for his high school’s 30th Anniversary Reunion in June 2000, he didn’t know it would also involve searching for his friend, Alex Holloman.

Unlike creating a magic illusion, which is based on principles of mathematics and science, attempting to find a missing person would challenge John Michaels’ expertise to ‘create a miracle’ in less than three weeks.

  Excellent read! , 08/14/2007

I found this book to be a thoroughly excellent read. The author used his "brush" well to paint a picture of the various locations throughout the book. Having been in some of the areas myself, I found myself "transported" back to those places. Mr. Albers' love of magic is well evident when reading this story. The story grips a reader quickly and doesn't let up until the end.

"Of Ghosts and Magic" is a thoroughly enjoyable piece of literature. Al Albers has created a unique and endearing character in master prestidigitator John Michaels. He somewhat reminds me of the character Bill Bixby played in the 1970s TV Series "The Magician," named Anthony Blake. But unlike Blake, Michaels is an unassuming gent who eschews the over-the-top flamboyance of your typical celebrity magician. He doesn't even live in Las Vegas or LA, but instead resides in Virginia Beach. I thought only sailors and car dealers lived there. But as you read the book, you'll see that Michaels is a magician's magician, a masterful conjurer and illusionist. Michaels also is not a shamus by choice. He is put into that situation while returning to his hometown of New York City for an innocuous 30-year High School Reunion, when the reunion coordinator asks John to relocate classmate Alex Holloman. Alex has been missing for over a quarter-century after a tragic event. But Michaels and Holloman are more than just "pass-by-the-hall" classmates: They ran track together, fought in Vietnam together, and it was Alex's cousin, attractive and charming Stella, who was an "item" for John before he travelled the world to perform magic. Albers leads you through a rapid-page-turning trail where Michaels faces the challenging and daunting task of locating the "Ghost" Alex Holloman. Can Michaels locate Alex in time for the reunion? Can Michaels devise and execute his final and greatest magic trick of his career? Will lifelong bachelors John and Stella find magic again? You'll be tempted to race ahead to find these answers. But you'd be missing a great story if you did that. I could extol many other praises to Albers' sterling work. But instead, I'll give you this. In my 48 years on earth, I have read only three books from cover to cover in less than 48 hours: John Cheever's "Falconer" (though I didn't particularly care for it), "The Godfather," and "Of Ghosts and Magic." Cheever, Puzo, and Albers -- what more can I say. Here's hoping that Al Albers follows this one up with many more stories featuring our hero John Michaels solving even more elaborate mysteries.

  Simple, yet intriguing! , 08/26/2007
Reviewer: Phil DeMarco
I have lived and worked most of my life in many of the places Al has brought to life. With exception of name changes to protect the innocent, everything in this story is real. Al has done a great job where one can almost smell the aromas of each neighborhood and locale brought to life. With regard to the mystery presented, Al has painted a realistic story based on everyday events in any part of America, although he has focused and married the fictional life and events taking place on, perhaps, not so fictional people. On a personal level, I've known Al for many years, both as a friend, co-worker, and a witness to his capabilities as a magician of which he has masterfully woven into this story. I am looking forward to his next novel should he undertake this tribulation again.

  Outstanding First Novel , 08/27/2007
Reviewer: Dennis J. Winkelsas
Mr. Albers has done such an outstanding job on this book that it's hard to believe it's his first novel. His characters and the story are well-developed. Mr. Albers expertly draws from his background as a native New Yorker now living in Virginia Beach, a seasoned professional magician, and a caring family man. The book is very well written and hard to put down. I am eagerly awaiting either a sequel or new story from this very talented author. Any audience is sure to enjoy this book!

  Marvelous First Novel , 10/08/2007
Reviewer: Jack Shea
As an avid reader, a book at home, one in the car to read when eating alone and a book on tape for driving, I can't get enough reading! "Of Ghosts and Magic" by Alfred Albers grabbed my attention and never let go through the entire book. This book is a very enjoyable and well written literature. Mr. Albers has given us a likeable character, master magician, John Michaels. Michaels is a nice guy who will show a simple trick to a fan, and he loves what he does. He lives in Virginia Beach, not in Las vegas where most of them live. As you read on, you will get to know this magician as you are taken back in time to his high school days. The story starts when he gets an invitation to his 30th High School Reunion. Michaels is not exactly a Private Investigator, he does have the curiosity of a magician and puts it to use in this book. He becomes a PI while returning to his hometown of New York City to attend and to find classmate Alex Holloman. Alex was the Class President and they only one that they can't find. Michaels agrees to find him and the game begins. Alber's vividly brings you to New York City to search for Alex presuming he is still alive. You can 'feel' the city and the sights, meet Stella, Michaels old girl friend and Alex's cousin. She has no idea where he is and still they search. Will Michaels find this "Ghost" in time for the reunion and will he rekindle his relationship with Stella. Michaels is going to need some 'real' magic to pull this off. Read this book and discover what happens. You will not be disappointed as it is well written and the trip Alber's sends you on is ups, downs and twists as you are propelled to the climax. If you are anything like me you will be anxiously awaiting Alber's next book.

  Thanks , 10/26/2007

Thanks Mr. Albers you took me down memory lane where there were good times and sad times, but friendship and the desire we all had to become guitar playes and be part of the new music life was the main goal to be achieved. I had forgotten how wonderful was the feeling of real friends and you made me think again about it. I did enjoy your book because magic is one of the arts I admire and enjoy. I hope you keep your good work., it was easy reading, fast and entertaning. Looking forward to the next.

This book kept me guessing all the way to the end. The characters were very realistic and I related to them and their feelings. I felt like I knew the characters like my own friends, the details of the magic performed made me feel like I was there watching the show. Buy the book; you wont regret it.

  Well done!!! , 02/12/2008
Reviewer: Glenn Meyer
Here's a book that is written in a manner that will keep the reader interested from start to finish. It's quite obvious that the author took into account that ten dollar words were not needed to create a story, only imagination and a little mystery to keep readers interested. It's a great story which I found very difficult to put down and resulted in my reading it within one day. It was a great way to start a vacation! If there is another book by this author, I'm sure it will be just as good.

  Good first novel , 04/03/2008
Reviewer: Charles Whitney
With his first novel, Mr. Albers has made a good start to writing fiction. The author's main character, John Michaels , is a magician. A real magician/illusionst like Blackstone, Houdini,Copperfield, etc. I really grew to know and like him and the other side characters in the book. I like the idea of magician as detective. The mystery and the setting of the upcoming high school reunion is something most readers can identify with very well. The book wrapped up a little too quickly for my taste. I would have enjoyed a bit more depth and breadth to finish at that point. I think Mr. Albers has a great future with this character and can imagine more novels with John Michaels headlining. I would buy another!

  Excellent First Book! , 07/18/2008
Reviewer: Rhonda Brennan
I thought this first book by Alfred Albers was very enjoyable and kept my interest to the end. The author wrote realistically about locations in Virginia Beach, VA. Having lived there myself, I could recognize those places he described. The characters were interesting and likeable, especially the Master Magician John Michaels. I enjoyed getting to know Michaels as intelligent, curious, caring and determined. And the magic woven throughout the book was a unique addition to the mystery storyline. Al's own passion for magic shines through. I was waiting as I turned each page to find out how our hero was going to accomplish his mission. I only wish that I could have followed along with John as the final pieces of the puzzle fell into place. Instead, I find out what happened along with Stella when John recounts the sequence of events that led to the successful conclusion of his search. I think Al has great potential and I can't wait for the sequel!

A Unique Blend of Mystery and Magic , 10/17/2008
Reviewer: T. Williams
Mr. Albers intuitively brings to life the aura of magic through John Michaels (America’s Foremost Magician) and his mission to solve the mysterious disappearance of a long time childhood friend and fellow classmate Alex Holloman. Mr. Michaels is asked to perform at his 30 yr. high school reunion. During the exchange with the event coordinator, Michaels learns that his friend Alex has been missing for several years. Michaels takes on the task of finding the whereabouts of Alex while preparing for a thrilling show complete with a grand finale. The storyline is brilliant from beginning to end in a wonderful and easy to read novel. From beginning to end, Mr. Albers' narrative and writing style paint a vivid picture of the scenes and challenges facing John Michaels in his quest to find Alex. Mr. Albers' expert depiction of New York and the verbiage used during the differing time periods coupled with his intricate knowledge of magic is superb. This is a novel that you will not want to put down!
