Abstract:
Founded in 1881 the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA) barred African Americans and Chinese Americans from participating in not only tournaments but also any function of the organization for the first 69 years of operation. The word Lawn” was dropped from the name in 1975 to read (USTA) United States Tennis Association. Only recently (1992) have they made a concentrated effort to include Minorities into the fabric of the organization. The book details the journey and struggle of an African American to break racial and cultural barriers and level the playing field from the grass courts to the board room.
