  Powerful! , 02/23/2008
Reviewer: Robert Williams
The blurbs in the ads and on the back cover of the book in no way prepared me for the impact of MOTHER OF EXILES. This is powerful stuff about good and evil, failure and grace, and human frailty. The unlikely heroine, Ronia Sorenson, plunges into the abyss of human misery as a chaplain in a maximum security prison. She is carried by the maelstrom of events, kicking, screaming, and protesting her unworthiness all the way, into ultimately making a difference in her world by taking a stand. In fact, it is her very human fumbling, blundering, and yes, bleeding heart, that in the end wins the day -- and our hearts. I sincerely hope that there are more Ronia Sorenson books in the pipeline; I want to keep her as a friend. Sharon Cairns Mann writes with grit, earthiness, humor, and a combination of affection and curiosity for people and their mixed feelings and motives. She seduces us with the realness of her characters and hooks us with a gripping story. This is one of the best novels I have read in years. Encore!

All I can say is "WOW!" It is SO GOOD! I love Ronia and her fumbling, blundering, and feelings of unworthiness, and how she keeps plodding along anyway. I love the way Sharon writes about people's mixed feelings and motives -- just like we really are! I'm hoping the book's roaring success will induce Sharon to write another Ronia Sorenson book.

  Make it a Movie! , 02/26/2008
Reviewer: Keith Sampson
I loved this book. Even though it is primarily about a woman's process of maturing in a most difficult situation, it still has the action and drama that Tom Clancy and John Grisham fans really enjoy. In addition, it has the soul-searching philosophical conflicts that we all face in life at one stage or another--the type of conflict that causes the reader to do some healthy introspection. It definitely needs to be made into a movie!

I read this in one sitting. I could not put it down. The characters are realistic and full of human emotion, the setting is true to form to this part of Southern Colorado, and the plot is gripping and unpredicatable. I loved this book and will recommend it to my friends and students without hesitation.

This book is a page turner. You won't want it to end. It is filled with wisdom; deals with some of the most difficult and painful situations with humor and forgiveness; finding the good in the unexpected and people. Uplifting. Leaves you feeling hopeful.

  A Good Read , 04/22/2008
Reviewer: Audrey D.
A very believable story that will take you behind the walls of a prison to learn the politics and policies of not only the staff, but also the inmates. The narrator is the likable sort--a do-gooder, but she's also flawed in her own ways. One thing that drove me a bit crazy was the formatting of the text: why have spaces between paragraphs? Totally unnecessary. Still, though, I pummeled through this book in a weekend because I *had* to know what was going to happen. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Eating Atomic Jalapeno Burgers at the Ramblin’ Rose Café and listening to dining companion’s Andee’s piquant candor happens to be Ronia Sorenson’s weekly social highlight. The small town of Cimarron, Colorado does not offer much socially for the single Ronia…well there is hunky Veterinarian Nick. What Cimarron does offer to Chicago native is an opportunity to bring love to the unloved and loveless population immured in the Colorado Women’s Correctional Facility (CWFC). Hired to be the facility’s first full-time Chaplin, she is expected by Warden Bent to turn these hardscrabble inmates into a docile flock of obedient lambs. Though conscious of the system’s intent, Ronia refuses to sully her collar…God’s collar as a tool to confirm the Warden’s harsh rules. Chaplin Sorenson’s precarious position is soon challenged when inmate Jonette Fox announces she is going on a hunger strike in response to the prison’s inflexibility. While Chaplin Sorenson is nicknamed ‘Swede’, Jonette’s moniker is ‘Mother of Exiles’…the Chaplin is about to discover how this so-called dissident earned such esteem. The experience fortifies Chaplin Sorenson’s altruistic resolve inside prison walls. As important, it allows Ronia to forgive herself for being human when it comes to her own personal life. I invite anyone who enjoys well-written novels with unexpected twists to read Mother of Exiles. Written masterfully in first person, Ronia Sorenson quickly emerges from a character into that charming person anyone would be delighted to call his or her friend! Tamara Wright

Great book! The book starts off good and then it gets better and better until the end when you are sad that you finished it and you want to keep reading. There are some great twists. It would make a good movie too. I would definitely recommend it!
