The Stories of Ismael is a wonderful book with three stories written from the perspective of a boy growing up in Puerto Rico during the 1940’s. Children who read this book will learn from a first-hand perspective, how different childhood was during that time period. Each of these stories is unique, interesting, and easy to picture. As a teacher, I see the value this book would have in the classroom to educate students on cultural differences in places other than our own. From my experience, too few books focus on the life of children in other parts of the word. I look forward to future books by Mr. Ruiz and will enjoy watching him grow as an author. -Roseanne Ellison Educational Instructor
