Abstract:
General Wesburn cherished the remoteness, from the ranch house to the hills and lakes beyond. Two graves were dug into the rocky ridge above the willow tree, then filled with sand. Murders were being planned. His sanctuary was violated. For thirty years no one dared come past the gatehouse entrance. It was a road not taken. War threatened. Detroit factories exploded, creating thousands of jobs. Joe Lewis, Old Bill and Hatchback Jack carried shot guns. The General was never without his pistol and attack dog. Sheriff Hitchcock and a private investigator promised the way of life on Wesburn Ranch would be restored.

Even before I had the book in my hands I knew I was going to like it. The author, Ted Lowes, is a source of information not only about WWII but also about any subject that one cares to exchange with him. As a WWII buff myself, the chapters in the book took me to places that I know in person, names of towns and places that reminded me of that sad time in our history. The poignancy of the theme itself is nevertheless spotted with witty characters... something that Ted does so well. I recommend this story to everybody. I enjoyed it very much and I wonder if there's going to be a sequel... Hmmm, somebody should convince the author that it must! Christina Brett
