  A historical treasure , 05/22/2008

I completed "The Soft Wind Whispers" just recently. The book is a treasure and I do hope that the author's family and other readers appreciate it! To think how Hardin Morgan's life changed so dramatically because he followed his beliefs regarding slavery.... Also, the historical notes are wonderful -- I have often said that young peope do not really appreciate history during their teen years when "forced" to study it in high school.... The horrible prices of wars, the influenza epidemic, the Great Depression, extreme weather conditiontions, etc.... And how TOUGH our ancestors were to survive the weather, injuries, and illnesses with primitive medicines prior to antibiotics and vaccines. Thanks for a wonderful book!

Nuggets of family history , 06/22/2008

I'm still looking for my family pack rat or rattete. Nancy Larsen has found hers! This book is a treasure trove of first-hand insights and descriptions of farming life in the Middle West from the Civil War to the Great Depression. Two tough, resilient, and articulate families' diaries, notes, and letters make for rewarding reading. I finished it in three enjoyable evening sittings. Thank you, Ms. Larsen, for allowing us to share your family's treasures. It was a good read.

I just finished The Soft Wind Whispers , 06/29/2008

I just finished your "The Soft Wind Whispers" and I am in awe. I laughed and I cried. I love the pictures. Weren't Bea and Gay amazing with their writings? Young people would be in shock, as they thought they invented Internet dating. I loved Grace, too.

An Interesting Walk Backwards , 06/30/2008
Reviewer: Jana Lee
What a fine time I had visiting with these people through journals, letters, cards, old receipts and pictures. It seems this author has taken a myriad of timeworn, faded and dusty old family papers and created a wonderful read through history. I enjoyed my walk with them during their pilgrimage to new lands, a childhood memory of dear Mother making hoecakes in the ashes of the fireplace and an old man's lament that his useful days were near an end. A delightful and eye opening travel.

  Fastinating Read , 07/12/2008

I just finished reading "A Soft Wind Whispers" for the second time. I find it difficult to categorize this book. It has history, poetry, drama, lost love, hopes and dreams all wrapped up into a great book. What a lucky family to have this in depth look into their ancestors journey from a South recovering from the Civil War to the Mid West where hardy pioneers made a life for themselves under harsh conditions. The descriptions of life on a plantation were so real I could picture the tobacco operation and the making of fabric from cotton and flax. And the letters! The art of writing has certainly been lost by us with our short e-mail notes of today. These letters are a true lesson in learning about life during the "great war". Thank you, Nancy, for sharing this beautiful story with us. Terrie Ferree

Great History and Poetry , 07/22/2008
Reviewer: Kristine Kemp
I have read "The Soft Wind Whispers twice now. I enjoyed it more the second time than the first. Anyone who enjoys history and poetry should read this book. The lives of George and Martha could teach us all so much. Their hard work was more than most of us could even think of today. The letters are so interesting and tell us some stories about war time that we would not hear elsewhere. What fun the grandkids must have had on "The Maples" Imagine being able to call George and Martha Grandpa and Grandma!! Thank-you Nancy. Kris Kemp
