How can a small boy leave Portugal, sail to South America, be captured as a slave for years, escape into an unknown jungle and still survive? Her name is Sallie.

Abstract:
A small boy runs away from home in Portugal, because he was frightened by stories that he will be taken into the service during the war. He jumps onto a ship and hides. Not knowing his destination, he is found by the ships cook, while at sea. He trembles as he is found out and then has to tell the captain why he is aboard. As his saga begins, they help him to his first destination…South America. Finding his way to North America becomes more frightening, until Sallie, his guardian angel, comes to his aid to help him in his journey.
