Life lessons learned from dogs of my youth, scouting, and racing helped me earn the right to be the master of an exceptional Sheltie named Shempi. Travel with me and Shempi on that journey.

Abstract:
When I was young, I realized that accomplishments required hard work, devotion and passion. This book honors my boy scoutmaster, racing friends and dad who taught me how to fulfill those requirements. These successes are what I call “earning the right.”

This book tells the tales of Shempi and me during our travels over many miles and years. The lonely days and nights on the road would never have been possible had it not been for her companionship. Her antics and fondness of people were second to none. Earning the Right to be Called Her Master is reflected in the many experiences and friends we made.

I thoroughly enjoyed the stories of Shempi. Davie is very compassionate and devoted to Shempi and also makes you wish you would have met this wonderful companion of his. There was a peace that was portrayed between Davie and Shempi. This was an easy read and I had a very hard time putting it down. Davie has definately earned the title, "Master."

Ignore the fact that I was briefly quoted. I had known Davie & Joyce for perhaps 20 years or more but still found new things to marvel at in this book. A great read and well worth your time. Don’t pass it by. And Shempi was all the dog Davie says she was.

I'm not a huge dog fan but I did have one once and found this book very enjoyable. I "couldn't put it down" and finished it within two days of starting it which for me is almost a record. I've talked about it to several people and as a consequence I've already borrowed it out to a friend.

For a guy that has a hard time reading a magazine article, I read the book in one evening! It is such a great story and reads very well! It's an inspiring story and really relates the mutual admiration of the dog and her Master! Both of which are extemely talented! My wife also read the book in one afternoon and she couldn't put it down either! Very enjoyable!

This was such a fun book to read. I loved being taken back to all the places in Michigan that I know well and visited growing up. It was a great book to curl up with and release my mind of all the day to day stresses. I want a dog just like Shempi !!!

  Priceless Memories , 06/28/2008

Davie & Joyce, I haven't been able to get you off my mind since I finished the book. I just really need to seriously let you know this... While reading it, I was overwhelmed with memories, and how fast time really goes. My time with you both was short, but it was some of the most precious time I've spent in my life. You'll never know how truly dear you both are to me, and the impact you made on my life. Davie's light hearted look at life helped me realize that I wasn't alone...I wasn't "the odd one"...there was another! Unknowingly he confirmed it was OK not to take things too serious, and to savor each moment we have here. Kind and loving Joyce reminded me, and still does, of how important John is to me, and how lucky I am to have someone tolerate and love me as much as he does. (Davie will understand) The definition of "Champion" is Joyce...Not because of her closet full of trophies and jackets, but because of her unshaken soul. Shempi will always be a priceless memory for me. When I think of her, as I do my Rusty, I will laugh and cry. I will always love her and when I see her at the Rainbow Bridge someday...I will do something I never had a chance to do when she was here...I will thank her for bringing me in to your lives. I love you both, Debbie

I'm 12 years old and to me Shempi: Earning the Right to Be Called Her Master was exelant. I'm sure Shempi would agree for you to call yourself her master. A dog like Shempi would be the greatest joy of life. I recently had the chance to meat Mr. Looman. He was very kind. He also had the chance to sign my book. Thank you Mr. Looman.

First, I want to thank Dave for letting us know he wrote this book. Once I started I couldn't put it down. It made me cry, and it made me laugh. It also really makes one think about their own life too. We have so many memories growing up, we tend to forget about them or better yet, put them off to the side. Dave helped me think about many things we did as kids. We took a lot for granted. Life goes by way too fast. I had the chance to meet Shempi. The part in the book where she walked into the body shop, (which was our shop by the way) and barked at the deer head hanging on the wall, then she wanted to run outside and find it's rear was the funniest thing we had ever seen a dog do. And she did it every time she came in. :)) I think after a while, she knew it was amusing to us, so she would perform for us, and we loved it! You did a great job with this one Dave!! I hope you keep writing, you sure have the talent! Thank You!... You truley deserve the right! and Shempi knew it too!!!... :))

Dave is a man who wrote this book from his heart and that is felt throughout the stories of Shempi and his family as well. It was a pleasure to read and walk alongside Dave as his memories are shared with us , as readers......well done, Davie!!!

I enjoyed the book Shempi very much. Many hours and miles were shared by Dave & Shempi, making unforgetable memories. Shempi was courious, outgoing and well behaved; perfect for a relatively shy guy with deep feelings and a big heart. The Looman Treasure Hunt was a neat story with a surprise ending!

A very enjoyable book to read about a man and his dog, with each enriching the other's life. Filled with interesting accounts about the adventures that often came unexpectedly into their daily lives. Shempi and Davie mutually shared their "mastership".
